Pre-orders allow you to purchase items that are not yet available, with partial or full payment at checkout. Cancellation is available only before the order is fulfilled.
Try before you buy allows you to try items with an authorized payment method. You have a decision period to decide if you want to keep or return the item. After the decision period ends, your payment method will be charged for the full amount of any items you have not returned.
